Yorkshire Coast college student John Norgate was a recent Brilliance Award winner gaining the title of Brickwork Learner of the Year. John completed his Level 1 Brickwork last year and after being introduced to Mitchell and Urwin Bricklaying Specialists at the recent Brilliance Awards by his Brickwork Tutor, John has gone on to gain a Level 2 Brickwork Apprenticeship with the company.
Dave Marshall, programme leader for Brickwork said ‘John was awarded student of the term on two consecutive occasions and demonstrated outstanding practical skills throughout. In theory sessions John always had a thirst to learn and finished off his work to a high standard’.
John a former Scalby School pupil said ‘I wanted to do something that was practical and hands on and felt initially the Brickwork Level 1 course would be a good introduction in to the Brickwork trade. I learnt how to set out basic masonry structures and also how to construct block, brick and cavity walling. I really enjoyed my time at the college and I often helped out around the campus in order to gain some work experience. I was thrilled to achieve Brickwork Learner of the Year at the Brilliance awards. I feel the course gave me a good head start and helped me to gain the Apprenticeship, I look forward to starting and learning more about Brickwork techniques’.
