Innovation in the business community was celebrated at the Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards 2015 as the Grimsby Institute awarded Wise Owl Private Day Nursery, a children’s day care service providers based in Scunthorpe and Messingham, a special award for Training Excellence.

The theme for this year’s awards was The Wizard of Oz and Performing Arts learners from the Grimsby Institute were also invited to once again perform alongside professional West End performers in a specially created show throughout the evening and were on hand to meet guests as they arrived.

Grimsby Institute’s Training Excellence Award was presented by Sue Middlehurst, Principal & Chief Executive of the Grimsby Institiuto Managing Director of Wise Owl Group, Toni Krajnik, who explained why training was so important to the organisation, Toni said:

“In the Childcare sector training is important because without good staff you can’t provide good care. We try to excel in every area in the Nursery and we try really hard to exceed Ofsted requirements and one of those requirements is that 50% of staff working in Childcare settings are trained to Level 2 or above.

“Approximately 95% of our staff are currently working towards the next Level of their education and a third of them are currently working towards a Level 6 qualification. We also fully embrace the Apprenticeship scheme. We recognise the value of training and what that means. As soon as one of our Nursery Nurses qualifies to Senior Level they offered the chance to progress on to our in-house Management Scheme.

“Because we’re an expanding company, when we open another setting, we already have staff that are fully trained to go into managerial positions. Having fully-trained staff makes a quality Nursery.

Toni continued: “It was pretty amazing to win this award, it’s great that someone has recognised the work that we do. I don’t think anyone realises the effort we put into encouraging our staff to do well, but then they don’t really need any encouragement, they are all very keen and really take on everything on we give them.”

Anne Tate, Event Organiser and Northern Lincolnshire Manager at the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, “Grimsby Institute have played an integral part of the Awards since its inception in 2002 and the Chamber is very grateful for their continued involvement over the last fourteen years. As sponsors in recent years they help to keep training and skills and their importance to business at the top of companies agendas.

“From the meet and great students, who not only looked amazing in their bespoke costumes and really got behind the Wizard of Oz theme, to the students who took part and dovetailed wonderfully into our after-dinner show with the professional performers; their commitment, enthusiasm and indeed talent were second to none. Anyone there on the night will know just how well the performance was received by the huge round of applause they got!

“So thank you Grimsby Institute and a particularly huge ‘thank you’ to all the students and staff who really went the extra mile for the Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards in 2015. You were awesome!”

Amanda Rudolph, Grimsby Institute Group’s Assistant Principal (Curriculum & Higher Education), added: “I’m delighted the Wise Owl Group were awarded this title as they demonstrate an excellent commitment to staff training at all levels of the organisation and this has made a clear impact on the quality of provision.

“The value they place on the development of their staff, the excellent progress made by individuals, the ambition and drive towards excellence and the long term strategy for continual professional development are just some of the reasons they deserve to win this award.”
