Staff Benefits Fair – one of the highlights of Staff Development Week

It’s Staff Development Week at the Grimsby Institute and everyone has been taking part in a wide variety of activities to enhance their skillset, find out more about the place they work and have some fun as they end the Academic Year.

The week has seen a host of workshops for staff, aimed at developing their skills with subjects like Customer Service Skills, Behavioural Management, Remote Desktop Access training and Mental Health Awareness. Wednesday saw Innovation Street, with Teaching and Business Support staff from across our sites sharing best practice, and on Thursday a Staff Benefits Fair took over the main campus at Nuns Corner.

The Fair was organised by Grimsby Institute’s Payroll Manager, Rowena Howard, and Director of Human Resources, Stephen Butler, and staff were invited to find out about a range of schemes

Rowena said: “We wanted to introduce a range of benefits that would be available to all of our employees. This includes schemes where staff can arrange a salary sacrifice for things like cars, cycles or IT loans for things like iPads or iPhones. This is a great way of getting high-end items, saving on Tax and National Insurance, and making a substantial saving on the item itself.

Stephen added: “We’re looking at ways of improving the working environment for all staff. This is just one of the schemes we’ve implemented to make working here an attractive prospect. We’re also doing our bit for the environment because these are all low-cost, low emission cars and of course you can’t get a much more carbon efficient alternative than a bike.”

Adrian Hulme, Senior Consultant at BHP Chartered Accountants, was on-hand to talk to staff about the scheme and the cars themselves. Adrian said: “These cars are available to employees on an a ‘just add fuel’ scheme. All they have to do is add fuel. The road tax, break down cover and insurance is included. There is no credit check and there is no deposit needed, it really is an excellent scheme.”

A new staff intranet will soon be launched that will detail all benefits available that includes Health Care, Life Assurance and a range of discounts available locally.
