Yorkshire Coast College staff and learners were saddened with the news that popular Refectory staff member, Simon Jackson, sadly passed away following a heart attack this month.
In memory of Simon, Uniformed Services held a charity fundraising event in the Sports Hall to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and, at the request of Victoria, Simon’s Wife, the Children’s Heart Surgery fund at Leeds General Infirmary.
The event was called “Simply for Simon” and involved activities that included Sumo Wrestling, a Gladiator-style Dual Challenge, a Cycle-thon and Row-a-thon (where the staff and students attempted to cycle and row the equivalent distance from Scarborough to Land’s End).
There was also a tuck shop for which the students baked their own cakes, a bracelet making stall and much, much more. Gary Taylor, Uniformed Services Tutor at YCC, managed to raise £112 himself by having his legs waxed. Gary said:
We raised an amazing £411 which will be split and sent to both charities. The students did a remarkable job at such short notice and with the support of all those that took part and attended we should all feel proud that the money will be going to two great causes in memory of Simon.
