Much-loved Hair & Beauty Salon, Pinky’s Vintage Salon, located in the heart of Grimsby, has been keeping clients looking fabulous at it’s new home in Haven Mill for just over a year and owner, Sarah Thompson, has a team of staff who are all former learners from the Grimsby Institute.
Not only are all of Sarah’s Hairdressers and Beauty Therapists but, Sarah also kindly opens up the salon to learners looking for work experience, making sure young people get the experience they need to succeed in salon life.
Sarah explained: “I originally started working closely with the Grimsby Institute when I took some former learners on to work for me. They were fresh out of training and were looking for a fresh start. They’d had no experience of working in a salon and some other salons wouldn’t give them a chance. I decided I wanted to give them an opportunity because If it hadn’t been for the fact that someone did the same for me when I was first starting out I wouldn’t be where I am today.
“When the learners are on work experience they will come in for one day a week and, if they are doing hair for example, they will shadow a stylist who will go through different techniques with them. I really love being able to do this.
“When young people come into work, straight from training at Grimsby Institute, they come knowing all the up-to-date techniques. I believe in giving young people who have worked hard, and have dreams and aspirations, an opportunity.”
Courtnie Tomlinson, 18, studied Level 2 Hairdressing & Beauty courses at the Grimsby Institute and is one of the Pinky’s newest team members. Courtney said: “I’ve always wanted to be in this industry, since I was 7 or 8 years old, and I decided to train at the Institute because they were offering the chance to study both Hair & Beauty in a combined course.
“I’ve been working at Pinky’s since June and I really love working with everyone and meeting new clients. It’s like a family. Because at the Institute you work in the Graduate Salon it really prepares you for the world of work.”
