Kevin Hooper might look like your typical, mild-mannered University Centre Grimsby (UCG) student but underneath his unassuming exterior he has just been crowned the English Lightweight Champion 2015 and is ranked 9th in the UK for his weight class at Boxing.
31-year-old Kevin is married with three children and is currently studying for a HNC in Sport & Exercise Sciences at UCG, hoping to put his education to full use once he retires from Boxing. Kevin explained:
“I was a student at Grimsby Institute when I left school but since then I’ve done different jobs, including being a security guard. I was working at a school before and that encouraged me to return to education because I wanted to go further in my career and I hope to one day become a PE Teacher.
“Being crowned the English Lightweight Champion 2015 felt like I’d made history because I’m the first person from this region to win the title. I’ve been boxing for 16 years and it means so much to be the best that I can be.”
Kevin will now defending his title in March 216 and although he plans on teaching more when he is ready to retire from boxing. Kevin continued:
“Studying at UCG has been helpful for things like nutrition and fitness testing. My eldest is now getting into Boxing so it might run in the family. To represent Grimsby and to do something well for the town and myself is a great feeling.”
