Daniel Parkes, currently training for a VRQ Level 2 in Professional Cookery was named the Star Student and Alexandra Seaton is currently training as a CAD Apprentice with ENGIE Fabricom and was announced as the Apprentice of the Year.

Seventeen-year-old Daniel has had a fantastic 2016 recently celebrating making it through to the grand final of the Tabasco Hot Chef Street Food Competition and he will also be competing at the regional final of the Nestlé Toque D’or competition. Daniel said:

“I’m really committed to what I do and I love cooking and it’s a real passion of mine. I think that knowing if I keep trying I can get somewhere in the end. I’m very proud to be representing the Institute like this and to be announced as the winner is such an honour.”

Daniel was nominated by his tutor, Paul Robinson, who added: “I’m absolutely chuffed to bits. It’s only the beginning of Dan’s career and he’s done such a great job already I’m sure it’s the start of a fantastic career.”

Alexandra Seaton, who is currently training with the Grimsby Institute and Fabricom as a CAD Apprentice, was named as the Apprentice of the Year, “I’m really overwhelmed to have won because everyone in my group were just so deserving. I came thinking that I would just be glad to be nominated, I’m so proud.

“I’ve been an Apprentice for two and a half years. I originally started as a pipe-fitter but I had an accident and my company gave me a wonderful opportunity to go into CAD. Previously I’d studied Level 3 Mechanical Engineering and I went into CAD with a sonar company. I support women in engineering completely. I’m so thankful to the Institute and my assessor for getting me here.”

Hugh Callaway, Grimsby Institute Group’s Executive Director of Marketing, said: “We are delighted that we were able to be the headline sponsor for the inaugural Golden Apple Education Awards.

“Everyone had such a fantastic evening and it was wonderful to hear so many stories of learners and staff from across North East Lincolnshire who have been inspired by learning and education.

“I’d like to offer my congratulations to all of the nominees and winners, especially Dan & Alex from the Grimsby Institute, who have truly demonstrated the Grimsby Institute’s vision of being inspiring, innovative and outstanding.”
