The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has commended Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education for the quality of information about its higher education provision and the enhancement of student learning opportunities, following a review of the Institute in February 2014.
The Institute was granted foundation degree awarding powers in August 2013 by the Privy Council following detailed scrutiny of the Institute’s application by QAA, which included the way the Institute sets academic standards for its Foundation Degrees, and the quality of students’ learning opportunities.
The review identified a number of examples of good practice. These include:
- The comprehensive range of web-based and mobile resources to ensure higher education students can easily access information
- Development of, and support given to, Students’ Union initiatives in teaching, learning and assessment
- Support for staff development, relating to professional updating and scholarly activity
- Staff engagement with the wider higher education sector through external activities. The review team did not identify any areas for improvement.
Ellen Thinnesen, the Grimsby Institute Group’s Assistant Principal 14-19 and Higher Education, said: “We are delighted with the findings of QAA in their Higher Education Review of our provision.
“The Grimsby Institute Group’s Higher Education provision at University Centre Grimsby and Yorkshire Coast College in Scarborough is rapidly expanding and we are thrilled to be able to announce we are now planning to award our own foundation degrees across these campuses.
“Our Higher Education staff have spent a considerable amount of time ensuring our students receive an outstanding experience, and the review clearly indicates that this time has been well spent. We are also committed to the development of our staff and, as the review highlights, this is another area in which we exceed national expectations.”
A successful review means that Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education can display the QAA Quality Mark, indicating to UK and international students that the Institute meets national requirements for standards and quality.
The review team comprised Dr Tommie Anderson-Jaquest (St Patrick’s International College, London), Martin Stimson (Writtle College), and Anthony Turjansky (Edge Hill University).
