Grimsby Institute Group launches The Academy Grimsby – a brand new route to employment

The Grimsby Institute Group is launching a brand new school and different route to employment for young people aged 14-16 years in Grimsby – The Academy Grimsby.

This exciting new venture will invite young people interested in gaining skills and qualifications in the Engineering & Care sectors to receive specialised training alongside traditional GCSE qualifications. With support from industry partners, The Academy Grimsby will offer a focused training pathway that will greatly enhance young people’s career prospects.

The Academy Grimsby will be located on Westward Ho in Grimsby, at the former site of the East Coast School of Art & Design, which will be redesigned and updated to offer 14-16 year olds a small, personalised learning environment with work-based facilities and the latest equipment including clinical skills rooms and engineering workshops & labs.

Principal & Chief Executive of the Grimsby Institute Group, Sue Middlehurst, explained: “Research has indicated that Engineering & Care are two primary sectors that are expected to grow in our region in the coming years. As an organisation we are focused on delivering qualifications that meet the needs of our region. I’m delighted that we will now be able to offer qualifications to a younger audience and prepare them, at an earlier stage, for a lifetime of successes.” The Academy Grimsby will see learners work with specialist teachers on gaining Level 2 qualifications in Care or Engineering alongside National Curriculum GCSE qualifications including Maths, English, Science and Citizenship. Students can add additional GCSE subjects that could include; History, Geography and Design Technology.

Sue continued: “We are opening The Academy to offer young people work-related knowledge and a greater understanding of the basic principles of an industry before they progress to Further Education, a Sixth Form provider or an Apprenticeship. All learners could then progress to Higher Education or directly into employment.

“We’ve designed The Academy Grimsby to initially focus on the Engineering & Care sectors which have been proven to be one of the largest industries for growth in our region. Research into these sectors by Economic Modelling Specialists International (EMSI) have revealed how they expect 15,735 job openings in Engineering and 23,446 job openings in Care in the Humber region before 2020. These figures demonstrate a need for trained professionals to be work-ready in order for these skills gaps to be addressed.”

Students training at The Academy Grimsby will have the opportunity to;

  • Study a Key Stage 4 curriculum – accounting for 80% of the total curriculum that a child would normally study at school.
  • Additionally study a vocational qualification linked to progression and employment – accounting for the other 20% of the curriculum.
  • Develop professional skills and knowledge in areas of employment that are in demand across the region.
  • Learn vocationally relevant skills within a unique and innovative environment using the latest e-technology.
  • Participate in meaningful work experience that is relevant to the student’s chosen vocation and career aspirations.
  • Work on innovative industry based projects and challenges set by employers.
  • Access support from achievement coaches and employers to help with aspirational target setting and career planning, followed by regular progress reviews of target achievement.

Lance Gardner, Chief Executive of the Care Plus Group who are supporting The Academy Grimsby, said:”As Chief Executive of Care Plus Group I feel honoured and privileged to be asked to enter into this very exciting partnership with Grimsby institute Group. We have worked really well together for a number of years and the new academy will be the pinnacle of the excellent work we have done together.

“This wonderful new academy will provide hope and aspiration for these children and for all of those who think they might like to care for others as a future career. The care academy will be the first of its kind in the UK and is something the people of North East Lincolnshire should be really proud of. I know that the staff of Care Plus Group are really looking forward to working alongside their colleagues at GIG to make this venture a resounding success.”

Barry Taylor, Commercial Director for Blackrow Engineering, added: “I’m delighted that Blackrow is able to offer support to The Academy Grimsby. We believe that this is going to be an important investment for the future of Engineering in our region and that by offering our support to these young people, we will be able to lay the foundations for them to have long, successful and rewarding careers.

“The training equipment that Engineering students will be using in The Academy Grimsby is going to offer them an enhanced, hands-on learning experience that will be a fun, interesting and ultimately gratifying new way of learning in our region.”

The first cohort of students who successfully join The Academy Grimsby will commence their full-time education from Key Stage 4 at the new facilities in September 2014.
