Grimsby Institute and University Centre Grimsby recognise their stars

The Grimsby Institute and University Centre Grimsby (UCG) recently celebrated the achievements of their Academic and Business Support staff at the annual Star Awards held in UCG’s Atrium for almost 100 invited guests.

Individuals and teams were presented with their trophies in front of friends, families, staff from across the Grimsby Institute Group. The ceremony was presented by Chris Wood, one of the Institute’s Hospitality Tutors, and almost 100 guests enjoyed a three-course meal prepared, cooked and served by Hospitality staff and learners before a cabaret performance by Level 3 Music learners Anna Garnett, Luke Blackburn and Summer Dawson.

The 23 awards were presented by Chair of the Corporation, Jonathan Lovelle, to staff who had shown their dedication, commitment and support to the Grimsby Institute and University Centre Grimsby over the last year. Jonathan said:

“The Star Awards are particularly special because staff are nominated by their peers. Whether they are teaching staff, the staff who look after our buildings and learners or the support staff.

“From all of the governors I want to say thank you to the winners. They make this place this special, they are this place and through education they are changing lives.”

Debra Gray, Acting Principal of the Grimsby Institute Group, presented the Principal’s Award on behalf of Sue Middlehurst to Alan Bird, the former Director of Finance who retired last August. During her closing speech, Debra said:

“There is a reason people come into education, it certainly isn’t the hours we work, it’s the fact that you know than every single day you make a difference, you create futures. By doing that you create hope for the future of their communities and I am incredibly proud of all of our award winners. We are going to be an outstanding institute because we have people like you.”
