Neil Jones, an IT learner at Lincolnshire Regional College, will receive a City & Guilds Medal of Excellence later this month at the awards ceremony in London, and has been additionally nominated for the ‘peoples choice’ award.
Following the breakdown of a long-term relationship, Neil’s self-esteem and confidence were severely affected and he enrolled at Lincolnshire Regional College last year on a City and Guilds ITQ Certificate Level 1, hoping this would prompt the change he felt he needed.
Despite the fact that Neil had always used computers, he was self-taught, which meant his employment prospects in the area were limited although he was desperate to return to work after being a full-time carer for his former partner.
Since joining us less than a year ago, Neil has completed all six modules available at Level 1, a full Level 2 qualification, and is now part way through the full Level 3 course. The tutors have his found his positive attitude and eagerness to learn stimulating and that it has been a pleasure encouraging him in his endeavours.
One tutor who has taken a special interest in Neil story is Elaine Dean. Elaine is currently studying an Open University course herself and has encouraged Neil to do the same, even going the extra mile to help him with the paperwork and to source funding.
As a result of his increase in knowledge, confidence and the qualifications that Neil has gained since joining the college he has now applied to the Grimsby Institute in the hope of being accepted as a volunteer. Neil hopes that in the long term this will build up his CV in order that he may succeed in gaining employment.
